Composition
Composing music is a personal and creative thing to do. However, to create compositions that musically "make sense" there is a degree of music theory that needs to be applied as well as conventions that need to be taught.
Tom teaches composition using Finale or Sibelius, though he has knowledge of using Digital Audio Workstation programmes such as Cubase or Logic.
Tom is increasingly asked to collaborate with songwriters, of all standards, to compose suitable harmonies for their melodies and lyrics and filling out the accompaniment with a wide range of ensembles.
As a tutor of composition, Tom has a wide knowledge and long experience of a variety of musical styles as well as a deep understanding of music theory; he also has ability to take the ideas of the student and enhance them rather than completely change them.
Tom always ensures that the creativity of the student is at the centre of his guidance and advice so it is not lost and the final version of the composition always belongs to the student.
